Youth Advisory Council -
The Youth Advisory Council meets at least once a month, and often more frequently, to organize service projects and to engage with local leaders to discuss issues of importance in our community. All local high school students from public and private schools are welcome to join this group of engaged and motivated teens dedicated to the wellbeing of our neighbors.
This year so far the group has discussed food security and the importance of green space to the health of a community with local leaders. In October the students have planned several costume drives to stock our annual free costume boutique. Each year the students also staff the boutique helping local kids pick out the Halloween look they desire.
Upcoming Opportunities to volunteer -
One weekend remains with the Annual Halloween Boo-tique! We would love additional helpers to stock costumes and help shoppers. The hours are Saturday, October 19 from 2-4 pm and Sunday, October 20 from 10 am to noon. The shopping takes place at the Cornog Field House at Memorial Field (5 Myrtle Avenue).
From now through Thanksgiving we are off our usual flow of meeting the second Sunday of the month because of their service focus for Halloween and Thanksgiving. In November the students will help plan and staff the fourth annual Community Thanksgiving. We will host an issues-based meeting in December.
Join us at our next Youth Advisory Council Meeting on December 8th at 1pm in the Senior Lounge at the Summit Community Center.
Past Activities have included -
To close the year the YAC planned the annual all-Summit Pool Party at the Summit Family Aquatic Center. Other topics of discussion have included equity in education, community policing, and accessible health care. In 2023, this group arranged a fundraiser at Panera Bread and a bake sale at Summit High School to support fundraising efforts and raise awareness in our community.
